Wolves take 2 from sluggers

Collegian Sports Writer

Michigan crossed the plate 24 times on the way to sweeping a doubleheader from the baseball team yesterday at Beaver Field.

The Wolverines (9-24, 3-9 in the Big Ten) defeated the Lions 8-0 in the first game and 16-7 in the second, and therefore won the rain-delayed weekend series three games to one.

For Penn State (10-15, 2-10), the opportunity to pick up a couple of home victories against one the Big Ten's lower-tier teams was squandered because of bad pitching and sloppy defense.

In yesterday's first game, Michigan's Eric Heintschel (2-4) shackled Penn State's bats, twirling a five-hit shutout. Designated hitter Sean Coston led the Wolverines offensive with a home run and two RBIs, while catcher Scott Niemiec also knocked in a pair of runs.

Lion starter Jeff Burris (3-3) wasn't entirely responsible for the loss. He held the Wolverines scoreless through the first four innings. He surrendered all eight runs -- only four of which were earned -- in the final three innings.

In game two -- a wild affair that lasted over 2 hours -- neither starter went the distance. Michigan jumped out to 4-0 and 7-1 leads, but the Lions battled back to within 7-5 and stayed close until the late innings.

Shortstop Scott Winterlee led the Michigan attack with a home run and five RBIs. Nate Holdren and Chad Chapman also slapped homers for the Wolverines.

For Penn State, Dave Hall had a homer and three RBIs, and shortstop Shawn Reese also knocked in three runs.

Notes:

-- The Lions will travel to West Virginia today for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

-- Yesterday's attendance at Beaver Field was 120.
