Spring cleaning

Earth Week is just a beginning to environmental improvement

The blizzard's snow has finally melted (except for the dirty clumps in parking lots) so it's time to celebrate the Earth -- now that we can see it.

Through Sunday, activities on campus will offer students a chance to celebrate Earth Week.

There's something for everyone -- whether it is ticketing gas-guzzling cars, joining a peace gathering or attending environmental discussions.

But this week should only be the spark for greater environmental awareness and activism all year round.

Simple opportunities exist to make the world a better place every day, though few students take them.

Recycle aluminum cans, glass, newspapers, office paper and plastic. Just because a receptacle isn't within 10 feet doesn't justify waste; hold on to the item and recycle it later.

Give a hoot, don't pollute; that owl was right. No one seems to talk about littering anymore, but recyclables aren't the only products that need to be put in their proper places. Garbage belongs in the trash, not on the ground.

Walk, take a bus, or carpool to class or work. It makes environmental and financial sense.

Our global home deserves attention, and celebrating Earth Week is just a start. Only daily environmental housekeeping will make a real difference.
