Donald Terry Hartman, DuBois Campus executive officer, died early yesterday morning. He was 50.
Dave Shaffer, DuBois director of University relations, said Hartman's death was unexpected and added that the cause of death still is unknown.
"There was no indication -- it was completely unexpected," Shaffer said. "He was a vital and energetic man and was involved at every level at the campus."
Prior to becoming DuBois Campus CEO in the fall of 1990, Hartman served as the vice president for academic affairs at the University of Charleston in West Virginia.
Robert Dunham, senior vice president and dean of the Commonwealth Educational System, said in a news release Hartman's death will be felt throughout the University community.
"This is a tremendous loss for Penn State DuBois and the entire Penn State family," Dunham said. "Terry had been doing some very exciting things at DuBois since his arrival."
James D. Gallagher, Worthington Scranton Campus CEO, said Hartman's sudden death would be felt by other CEOs around the Commonwealth.
"We work closely as a group of CEOs," Gallagher said. "There's a natural comradery that develops."
Corrinne A. Caldwell, Mont Alto Campus CEO, said people will remember Hartman as a decent man with high ethical and moral standards.
"It's a loss we're all going to experience," Caldwell said. "We had all worked together on many projects. His absence will be felt."
Born in Lebanon, Pa., Hartman graduated with high honors from Albright College with a bachelor's degree in philosophy and English literature. Hartman received his master's and doctoral degrees in contemporary analytical philosophy from the University of Michigan.
Survivors include his wife, Sue, and a son and daughter. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, followed by cremation.
