For State College residents, help is just a phone call away. The Undergraduate Student Government Senate last night narrowly approved a measure to amend senate bylaws so the senate president and committee chairs are elected for the entire year. Silk flowers, plungers, cutlery and spaghetti sauce all have one thing in common -- a $1 price tag, at least at dollar stores. Even with three University students vying for positions in the State College borough government, student leaders say student apathy could close the door on any possible victory. Centre County emergency plans coordinator John Hvizdash was prepared for a wall of water to storm through Philipsburg, washing away cars and buildings. In the past, the needs of Latina women have gone unfulfilled at Penn State, but now some of these women may find an answer in a newly formed Latina sorority at the University. After a year-long search, the black studies program soon will become a full-fledged department with a department head. As students prepare to select the next Undergraduate Student Government president, controversy and tensions continue to arise.
No pressure, guys. These words of comfort might seem a bit shallow to the members of the men's epee team right now, because all the pressure is on them as they hit the strips today in the last leg of competition at the NCAA fencing championships in Detroit. The men's tennis team will have one last match before it starts Big Ten play. Because Martha Wells is an exceptional golfer, people might think she has a golf course in her backyard. As a matter of fact, she does. When Michigan announced on March 22 that it was discontinuing men's gymnastics after next season, it opened a floodgate of questions, controversy and ramifications. The baseball season opens in just five days after another busy and interesting offseason. New faces abound -- especially with the expansion teams in Florida and Colorado. But there are still numerous ties to 1970s and 1960s baseball, namely Charlie Hough, Dave Winfield and -- of course -- Nolan Ryan.
