Five police officers are vying for the position of State College police chief. State College Bureau of Police Services Chief Elwood Williams is retiring from the police force April 16, but he's not going to spend much time relaxing at home. Evan Smith's job as emergency plans coordinator for the Seneca Army Depot in New York frequently required him to make tough decisions in difficult situations. Scott Lee said he would get another job to pay for his cigarettes if he had to. For Missy Lewis, working for the Association for Retarded Citizens isn't just a job -- it's a pastime. A double murder and suicide occurred in Penns Valley this weekend when a husband shot and killed his wife and one of her friends, then later turned the gun on himself. A University Student Advisory Board subcommittee announced last week the names of the four finalists competing for the student position on the Board of Trustees. An autopsy performed Thursday on the unidentified woman found Wednesday morning near an entrance ramp to state Route 26 revealed her death was a homicide due to strangulation, according to Rockview State Police. With elections coming up this weekend, another ticket has announced its candidacy for the positions of coordinator and vice coordinator for the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments.
There was some rain and hail down in North Carolina last weekend, but in no way did it spoil the women's track team's first chance to do a little work outdoors. Inexperience proved to be costly for the men's swimming and diving team at NCAA Championships this weekend. After two days of competition at the NCAA championships in Detroit, the Lions' fencing team has a solid foothold on the coveted national title it lost to Columbia last year. While the men's track team didn't have to brave the cold, wind or rain at its first outdoor meet, it still had to deal with the sloppy conditions at the Nittany Lion Track. This weekend, the women's lacrosse team learned that it is better to give than to receive. The question mark at the fullback positon may be answered by sophomore Brian Milne's decision to return to football. The weekend started in fine fashion for the baseball team on Friday, the first game of a four-game set with Indiana, but after that . . . well, Friday was certainly good. Maybe all the men's lacrosse team needed was some home cooking. Call it the year the dark horse died.
