Grapplers shut down Bloomsburg

Collegian Sports Writer

A big goose egg.

That's all the Bloomsburg team saw when they looked at the scoreboard after being thrashed 39-0 by the No. 1 ranked wrestling team.

"These guys just took it to them," Coach John Fritz said. "If they keep wrestling like this things will take care of themselves down the homestretch."

The Lions raised their record to 17-0-1, including 16 wins in a row.

Shawn Nelson got the Lions rolling. Nelson bounced back from his loss on Saturday and after giving up the first takedown, dominated Pete Rinella for the next six minutes.

"Shawn was real relaxed tonight," Fritz said. "Contary to Saturday when he was a little bit tight."

At 126 pounds Sanshiro Abe kept the Lions rolling with a technical fall over Randy Reidler.

Then at 134, Ryan Heimbach, wrestling in place of Cary Kolat, dominated Steve Lilley 11-1.

"He (Heimbach) was real determined," Fritz said. "I was real proud of him."

The Lions just continued to show the Huskies why they are on top of the wrestling world. Four of the next five bouts were major decisions or better, including a pin by Troy Minnich at 167, subbing for Dave Hart.

"I think the guys were really focused out there," Fritz said.

Freshman 190-pounder Kerry McCoy, who seems to meet a ranked wrestler every week, had another tough match.

Bloomsburg Tyrone Howard came into the match sporting an 18-5 record, but tonight McCoy was the better wrestler winning the match 4-3.

"I've been working hard and getting better each match," McCoy said. " Now I know the work I'm doing is paying off."

Fritz is also seeing the improvement of McCoy.

"As we head into the end of the season he just keeps getting better and better," Fritz said.

Heavyweight Greg Troxell put the final nail in the already sealed coffin with a hard fought 2-0 win over Brian Keck.

"Each guy focused on what we had to do and we really took it to them," 150-pounder Troy Sunderland said of the way the Lions dominated the Huskies.

The shut out was the first of the season for the Lions, but they have no intention to rest on their laurels and even worked out last night after the meet.
