The University Future Committee and the Faculty Senate will not be the only organizations to scrutinize proposed budget cuts.
The President's Planning and Budget Advisory Committee (PPBAC) will consider recommendations from students and the University Future Committee, said Committee Chair John Brighton.
The committee, which exists to advise University President Joab Thomas on budget concerns, will make separate recommendations to Thomas, Brighton said.
These recommendations will be made in May, said student committee member Hina Khan.
Thomas wanted additional input on the budget-cutting process and asked the PPBAC to review all strategic plans and make independent recommendations, Brighton said.
Khan said the PPBAC will look at the proposals in terms of actual expenditures, whereas the future committee considers long-term trends and direction in the University.
The 22-member committee will have four student members.
Three students are typically on the committee every year, Brighton said. Khan, also a future committee member, was added because of her experience in the planning process, he said.
Lisa Loch, student PPBAC member, said the role of being a student member is to voice undergraduate student concerns to the group.
Although students can communicate with Loch personally, PPBAC meetings will be kept closed to allow the committee to brainstorm freely, she said.
"Off-the-wall ideas, radical ideas need consideration," Loch said, adding that the media and public opinion may censor the flow of ideas.
And both Loch and Khan said they are receptive to student input.
"My number is in the book; anyone can call -- I'm their voice," Khan said.
Loch said she plans to recruit opinions throughout the student community and may plan question and answer programs with students.
Undergradute Student Government President Rob Kampia said four students on the committee are beneficial, but he thinks USG should have had a role in appointing a student.
Brighton, who chairs both the future committee and the planning and advisory committee, will meet with the North Halls Association of Students at 6:30 tonight in Warnock Commons. The meeting will be open to the public.
