A 31-year-old man from Michigan was ordered by District Magistrate Ronald Horner yesterday to stand trial for allegedly fighting with a University student at the All American Rathskeller, 108 S. Pugh St.
Greg T. Powell of Detroit was charged with ethnic intimidation and harassment and disorderly conduct stemming from an incident that occurred about midnight Jan. 7. The defendant allegedly attacked the victim inside the bar while using racial slurs.
The victim said he was trying to pass between Powell and a pool table. He testified that he said, "Excuse me," twice and Powell did not move. The victim said he brushed by, saying a foul term, and Powell allegedly responded by hitting the victim in the mouth.
L. Steven Petrazio of 728 Bellaire Ave., a University student and bouncer at the bar, witnessed the incident. He testified that Powell used racist and foul language, calling the victim a "nigger" and threatening to kill him.
State College Bureau of Police Services Officer A.J. Lopinsky also testified that while in the police car, after Powell was charged, Powell said he hoped there were more black people at the prison so he could hurt them too.
In other cases that appeared before Horner yesterday:
-- A University graduate student was ordered to stand trial for allegedly harassing a woman who lives in his apartment complex.
Peter J. Bromfield of 333 Logan Ave. was charged with harassment by communication stemming from incidents that occurred between Nov. 21 and Dec. 8.
The victim, Ann Marie Spigelmyer of 333 Logan Ave., testified that Bromfield stopped her physically in the stairwell as she was coming down from her apartment. Spigelmyer said that on separate occasions the defendant called her and said things like, "Hi Steamy," and "I'm psychic. I know what you're doing. I see you sitting there."
Spigelmyer also testified that after she reported Bromfield to the police, he wrote a note that apologized for his actions and asked to talk with her.
-- A 39-year-old resident of State College was ordered to stand trial on charges he harassed a University English department staff member with letters and a phone call.
Jonathan Hazelton of 8 Collegeview Trailer Park was charged with harassment by communication stemming from incidents that occurred between November 1992 and February 1993.
The victim, who requested that her name be withheld, testified Hazelton sent her letters saying how much he loved her and describing incidents that never occurred. Some of the letters he allegedly wrote were 29, 33 and 50 pages in length.
