Kolat suspended

Freshman wrestler Cary Kolat has been suspended indefinitely by Coach John Fritz following an alcohol-related incident on campus early Sunday morning.

An officer found Kolat lying unconscious outside of Willard Building at 4:05 a.m. when temperatures had dipped to 6 degrees, University Police Services said.

The officer then cited Kolat for public drunkenness, University police said. A public drunkenness charge is a summary offense, much like a traffic ticket. Punishment is limited to a $300 fine or 90 days in jail, or both.

The incident occurred just hours after the wrestling team defeated Iowa State, 23-12, in Rec Hall.

Kolat is ranked fifth in the nation at 134 pounds, and is 12-3 for the top-ranked Lions.

"Cary sincerely regrets the episode, which is an embarrassment to him personally and to the Penn State wrestling program," Fritz said in a news release. "We have suspended Cary from competition effective immediately. Cary understands the seriousness of his offense and the necessity for the disciplinary action we have imposed. We are determined to deal severely with conduct that fails to reflect the high personal standards to which we hold our wrestlers as individuals and athletes."

Fritz said he would consider reinstatement for Kolat when he deems it appropriate, adding that "a penalty must be served for such unbecoming conduct."

While on suspension, Kolat will be required to attend all team practices but will not be permitted to compete in matches.

Kolat, a native of Rices Landing, about 45 miles south of Pittsburgh, was one of the most recruited high school wrestlers in the nation a year ago. He was 137-0 with 80 pins and 36 technical falls.

This is not the first setback for Kolat during his first year of college. Last October, he broke a bone in his right hand and missed some preseason practice.

Ryan Heimbach and Terry Brennan are the wrestlers most likely to fill in at 134 pounds during Kolat's suspension.
