Briggs breaks foot, but may still compete

Gymnast Rich Briggs broke two bones in his left foot during Sunday's practice, but may still compete when the team travels to Temple on Saturday night.

"Things are still up in the air as far as his participation," Coach Randy Jepson said. "We want to do what's best for Rich."

Briggs injured his foot only two days after his first-place still rings performance in Penn State's victory over Syracuse.

"I was doing a triple on trampoline," Briggs said, "and I landed on my feet, but I broke two bones."

Brigg's status for Saturday's meet against Temple is questionable.

"Even if he does a routine and doesn't dismount," Jepson said, "he could still probably score better then some of our other people."

Not doing a dismount would result in a 0.4 deduction. Briggs scored 9.7 in Friday's meet. Even with the deduction, Briggs would have scored higher than all of his teammates except captain Mike Masucci, who posted a 9.55.

"Competing is something I want to do," Briggs said. "But we're still making that decision . . . I want to do what is best for the team."

Briggs, a 1991 All-American on the still rings, said he will be in a cast for four weeks and expects to fully regain his strength about two weeks after that. Meanwhile, Briggs is continuing to work out with the team.

"He was back in the gym with the cast on (yesterday), strength training and going at it," Jepson said. "He's always had a great attitude, which is why he's gotten as far as he has."

Briggs also competed on the parallel bars Friday night, earning fifth place with an 8.9. Jepson said he has not yet decided who will replace Briggs in this event.
