Student power

Student rights are once again in danger of being trampled upon by the powerful minority. I am speaking of the proposed fair housing ordinance, and the few non-student leaders who don't want to see student status in the ordinance. This ordinance would protect individuals from discrimination in housing. Were student status listed as a protected group, students would finally have the same right to housing as everyone else in State College. But some community leaders and landowners think discriminating against students should be their right. There is no reason that students should let this happen. We are 70 percent of the borough population, and if we would just wake up and look around, we could control this community. It is as much our community as it is theirs, but for some reason, students don't seem to care what's happening around them.

We seem to have the view that we're only here for four years, so who cares what the hell borough council does. But this ordinance is something that will affect us, right here, right now. If we can get it passed with student status as a protected group, we will finally have some power in State College. And so will other students for years to come. Should we be remembered as the students who blew it for everyone else? Or can we finally take a stand on something that we do have the power to see through? Register to vote in State College. This is your home. Vote in the borough elections. These officials dictate the laws that affect your life. And show up at the public hearing on the fair housing ordinance tonight, to show your support, or speak your mind. It is at 7:30 in the State College High School south building auditorium, 650 Westerly Parkway. If you don't have transportation to the meeting, get on the CATA E.S. bus, leaving the HUB at 7:18 and 7:53 and leaving from College Avenue and Allen Street at 6:50, 7:25 and 8.
