Despite four character references on his behalf, William McVicker was ordered Collegian Staff Writerto pay more than $500 in fines for personal use of University funds. A former Penn State Bookstore administrator pleaded guilty and was sentenced yesterday to three years probation for taking more than $8,377 from the University.
William McVicker, former bookstore director, will also have to pay court cost, a $500 fine and make restitution to the University. About $1,300 was repaid before charges were made, said his attorney Edward Blanarik.
Blanarik submitted four character reference letters to the court on McVicker's behalf. McVicker made no comments before the court.
Lew Mothersbaugh, director for business services, refused to comment on McVicker's sentence.
"I don't like to look back . . . it doesn't do any good," Mothersbaugh said.
Specific allegations against McVicker included filing false travel vouchers and using University money to pay for airfare to the Fiesta Bowl for two family members.
His case had been postponed for several months while lawyers plea-bargained the case of John Bischoff, former director of auxiliary services.
Bischoff was sentenced last month to three to 23 months in-house detention, court costs, a fine and community service for taking $29,365 from the University. Bischoff was in charge of Universitywide bookstore operations.
Both McVicker and Bischoff resigned from the University in July after details of the investigation surfaced. They were arrested and charged in early August.
