IFC renews membership of suspended fraternity

The Interfraternity Council voted last night to readmit Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity as a full member of the council.

The fraternity was placed on social probation for Fall Semester because of hazing.

An IFC investigation took place last spring after former members of the fraternity alleged hazing activities had taken place at the fraternity during previous years' pledge periods.

The fraternity was also placed under adminstrative warning for the 1992-1993 academic year. It also had to reconstruct its pledge program.

"Delta Kappa Epsilon has now been granted full membership status in IFC," IFC President Joe Jorczak said, adding that he was pleased that the fraternity had been accepted.

Jorczak said the IFC looked at the strength of the brotherhood to see how involved they were in events such as Homecoming, Dance Marathon and educational programs.

"They used the last year to revamp their educational programs," said Rick Funk, Greek Life Coordinator. "The most difficult part of the last year for them was appearing before the expansionary review board."

Fraternity members had to answer questions about how they planned to become fundamental members of the Greek community, Funk said.

In other business, the council passed the revised IFC bylaws with the exception of social card distribution. The bylaws currently state that cards "must be honored at all social and rush functions." Certain members expressed concern at the idea of limiting the distribution, which would punish all members for the actions of a few.

"It won't be a problem if we regulate who gets the cards," Jorczak said.

IFC decided to table the issue for the remainder of the semester and vote on it at the start of the Spring Semester.
