Grease clogs sewer line, spilling water on sidewalk

A blob of grease -- probably from a University dining hall --clogged a sewer line on Burrowes Road yesterday, spewing sewage onto the street.

The line, which serves the buildings on the east side of the road, clogged at about 2:30 yesterday afternoon at the corner of Burrowes Road and College Avenue.

Employees of the Office of Physical Plant set up cement blocks to contain the water, which was flowing out of the ground and cascading over a stone wall onto the sidewalk.

The water was directed into a nearby manhole covering a sewer line that serves buildings on the west side of Burrowes Road. A power flusher from OPP arrived about a half hour later and pumped liquid through the sewer system in order to force the clog out. The flow of water stopped about five minutes later.

The problem appeared to be a blob of grease, probably from one of the dining halls, said an OPP utility division official.
