Lady ruggers face Juniata for title

Collegian Sports Writer

The Women's Rugby Club is ready to "ruck and roll" again, as it prepares for the Allegheny Rugby Union Championship game at noon Saturday behind the Flower Gardens.

Penn State (6-0), the Midwest Regional champion, hopes to continue its winning streak against a scrappy Juniata College team in its last home game of the fall. The two teams met last year, with Penn State winning a physical, low-scoring game at Juniata. Many players on the team are looking forward to opening up the play this time around.

"It was a very rough game last year," Leslie Myers said. "They were more physical than skilled, it was kind of nasty."

Penn State looks to keep its momentum after last weeks 44-0 trouncing of University of Maryland at Baltimore County. Six different players scored for Penn State last week, utilizing a swarming, in-your-face style of defense to set up many scoring oppertunities and stifle any offensive thrust by UMBC.

"The team is really up since regionals," Rebecca Williams said. "The team is getting stronger."

Coach Charlie Smith attributes much of the team's success to the consistent domination by the forwards. Because the forwards are playing well, the backs, led by Tricia Chipeleski and Sharon Podbielski, are able to invade opposing backfields and create havoc. Three different forwards, Jen Sproull, Suzanne Hannan and Kim Harms, scored against UMBC, and that helps to open the field up for the backs.

"The level we're playing at is so much higher than last year, it's incredible," Williams said. "We've come a long way."

After this weekend, the team plays two road games to finish the fall season, Nov. 7 at Rochester and Nov. 14 at Shippensburg.
