Lady spikers return to Rec Hall riding a wave of wins

It's a big weekend for streaks for the Lady Lion volleyball team.

Penn State (18-2, 10-0 in the Big Ten) is looking to keep its 17-match winning streak going as well as its 21-match Rec Hall winning streak.

Tonight, on the Rec Hall hardwood, the Lady Lions meet Purdue (12-8, 5-5). Then tomorrow night the Lady Lions have another Big Ten test, when Indiana (4-15, 2-8) spikes its way into Happy Valley.

Setter Salima Davidson said the team feels pretty good coming into this weekend.

"Right now we're having a good time playing," she said.

"Coach wasn't pleased with our play last weekend, so practice was a little tough," she added, "but we still feel pretty good so that's a good sign," Davidson looks forward to the crowd's participation in the matches this weekend and thinks Purdue and Indiana will have less of an advantage because of it.

"The crowd is a definite advantage," she said. "Any big play we make, they go nuts and that keeps us going."

The Lady Lions handily beat Purdue in the Boilermakers' small facility with a loud crowd and band present so the home crowd at Rec Hall could double the Lady Lions' intensity.

Davidson knows that her play this weekend will be a big key to the outcomes.

"I always have to play well," she said. "I'm the only setter on the court so I have to keep my head in the game. We have a lot of hitters on the court to change around if someone isn't on."

Davidson hopes to stay up and positive for the game to keep the team together.

Since Penn State is still undefeated in Big Ten play, the team needs these victories to stay ahead of fast-charging Illinois (9-1 in the Big Ten). Penn State, already with a victory over the Illini, will not play them again until the final weekend of the season.

"We're really looking to play well to stay undefeated when we go in to play Illinois," she said. "We need to play consistent volleyball until then."
