FAIRNESS is all we ask! Once again The Daily Collegian has shown its blatant disregard for the principles of unbiased journalism and accurate reporting by succumbing to the pressures of liberal campus groups. The article by Shelley Gehret and Bonnie Harman ("Students, residents link against abortion rights," Oct. 26, p. 8) not only failed to correctly report the purpose of Sunday's LifeChain demonstration, but also irresponsibly misconstrued information to suit their purposes. Perhaps I should have expected personal opinions to slant the article, but at no time was I prepared to be deliberately misquoted. The LifeChain was a silent, peaceful protest in which hundreds of participants held signs reading, "Abortion Kills Children." The reason for the silence, as I explicitly stated to the Collegian reporter, was to allow the signs to speak for themselves in professing our beliefs. At no time did I say we were afraid to address the 10 to 15 counter-demonstrators. We have come to realize, unlike our counterparts, that nothing gets accomplished by screaming. I believe the LifeChain was an important statement to the community that most pro-life people do not fit the sterotypically violent media portrayal. Pro-lifers are concerned with all human life -- born and unborn. We simply want the same kind of respect in media coverage as other groups.
