It's a hauntingly good time
Group visits Tener Hall

Smiles abounded and cries of delight resounded through the corridors of Tener Hall where residents put on the 10th annual Halloween party for physically and mentally disabled adults.

Although most ghosts and goblins won't come out until tomorrow, Halloween came earlier this week for about 30 residents from the Laurelton Center in Laurelton.

The center provides live-in care for physically and mentally disabled adults aged 19 to 63.

Peg Sadleo, a center resident, said she looked forward to the party all year.

"Halloween is my favorite holiday . . . I have a great time at this party," Sadleo said.

Guests and students paired up to trick-or-treat. In disguises ranging from Captain Hook to Madonna, they collected candy and squealed in delight and terror upon entering rooms decorated for the creepy holiday.

The trick-or-treaters moved on to the Findlay Commons recreation room, where they cut loose with a disc jockey and dancing. Plenty of food and an accordion player also were on hand.

One Tener Hall resident said both the center's residents and the students enjoyed the party.

"We do it because it's the most exciting time of the year for them so it's exciting for us," said Tracey Starr (sophomore-journalism and English education).

The party is put on solely by Tener Hall residents, with donations from Residence Life and the East Halls Residence Association.

"This has been the most successful party yet . . . the residents participated a lot more this year," said Tanya Clark, a resident assistant and second-year event chairwoman. Clark said an RA came up with the idea 10 years ago and the event has grown into a tradition.

For this year's party, Clark (senior-art education) recruited volunteers from the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania.

"It's a good learning experience for me and it gives the individuals from Laurelton the opportunity to get out," said Amy Williams (senior-nursing), a SNAP volunteer.
