Letter to the Editor
Listen up

This is Sexual Assault Awareness Week, so here are the statistics one more time. One of every four college women will be the victim of rape or attempted rape during her college years. One in every three women will be raped during her lifetime. One of every nine to 12 men rape.

This letter is not to warn college women. We already know the danger -- go back and read the opening statistics if you are still unclear. This letter is for men.

Rape will not be prevented by cans of Mace, whistles or karate. Rape will not be prevented by women taking on the responsibility of changing their clothes, their behavior or their lifestyles in hopes of not being raped. Rape will only be prevented when men stop doing it. ATTENTION MEN: STOP RAPING!!

I know there are non-rapist men out there who are offended by their inclusion in the previous order and I am sorry I offended you, but I don't know who you are and neither do any women. We never truly know who will or who will not rape us. Please excuse yourself from the inclusion in the category of men who rape and place yourself in the category of men who actively try to prevent rape.

Actively prevent rape by addressing sexist comments, jokes, assumptions and attitudes made by your friends. Pay attention to the dynamics of male/female interactions at the bars and parties. Is he feeding her alcohol? Is he telling his friends he's going to "get" that blonde over there? Is he harassing her? Hanging on to her? Not respecting her personal space or wishes? If the answer is "yes," jump into the situation and do something! Help women to educate men about rape and the disrespectful, sexist attitudes that are a part of a rapist's mentality.

Men, let's get those statistics lowered. Think of three women who are close to you. How will you feel when you learn one of them has been raped? I will say it one more time. STOP RAPING.
