The Lady Booters hope to be on their toes this weekend after the Ohio State Buckeyes stepped on them last Saturday.
With a 4-1 record, the Lady Booters would like to chalk up last Saturday's 1-0 loss as simply an "off-day" and use their other four wins as a better example of the team's abilities.
"The team wasn't pleased with their first loss at home knowing we could have played better," said Coach Dirck Aumiller. "We were a tired team and Ohio was a step ahead of us to the ball.".
"I don't think we were mentally prepared and we started to panic when things didn't go right for us," said sophomore defender Susan Criss.
In addition to overall fatigue, injuries also plagued the team, putting a damper on its usual aggressive style.
Sophomore Bridget Brugger, a key midfielder, was out with a knee injury she suffered in practice. Senior Becky Quinn, another midfielder, had to leave the game for awhile after suffering muscle spasms from a previous leg bruise. And Criss was not playing her best due to a pulled muscle from the previous night's game.
The Lady Booters don't plan to dwell on their loss but rather learn from it.
"(Saturday's game) was only a small setback, but by no means an outlook for the rest of the season," said Criss. "I think we will grow and improve from it and be better mentally prepared in the future."
"Maybe (the loss) will be good down the road -- good things can come out of losing," Aumiller said.
And the team is fully aware of where the improvement is needed.
"One of our biggest problems is that we're so set on scoring. We're not communicating effectively and we get so nervous we can't get the ball in (the goal)," Criss said. "We need to better utilize scoring opportunities."
"We need to perfect short passing and moving the ball down the field quicker," said freshman Jen Maloney.
This week, Aumiller started practices off on a lighter foot to ease the team back up to its full capacity.
"We focused on playing one and two touch soccer to get rid of the ball quicker. They tend to dribble the ball too much then lose it," Aumiller said.
With a full week of practices and enough sleep, the Lady Booters should be well prepared for their match tonight at Seton Hall.
Aumiller is unsure of what to expect from Seton Hall.
"I understand they are growing and pushing to be varsity. I expect it to be a competitive game," he said.
Sunday's home game against Widener Univerity, scheduled for 2 p.m., has been cancelled.
