Kampia must go

Rob Kampia must go! When Kampia was elected president (on a platform of "no more buttheads" in office) I was willing to allow him the opportunity to succeed. Who knows, I thought, maybe he is just what we need. But the events of his presidency lead me to conclude that Rob Kampia is irresponsible and that he is promoting his own personal agenda ahead of the needs of his constituency.

Kampia's irresponsibility began when he failed to attend the University Board of Trustees meeting where the final decision was made to raise tuition. Where was Rob? "I have to eat," was his response to reporter's questioning his absence. I have to eat too, Rob. But that doesn't mean I shirk my responsibilities. Kampia doesn't have to worry about higher tuition. As Undergraduate Student Government president, he gets a full scholarship. At least Rob is taking care of Rob.

Kampia's agenda to legalize marijuana is far to the left of the consensus of University students. The 400 to 500 students in attendance at the "long-awaited marijuana debate" on a campus of 41,000 punctuates the point. I defend his right to think what he chooses concerning marijuana as a matter of personal belief and conviction. However, to politicize the issue and make it a student government concern is ludicrous. Who are you doing this for, Rob?

With the eyes of the nation on Penn State, Kampia led students in a shantytown sit-in protest of Bush's handling of four issues, including the legalization of marijuana. By numbering the marijuana issue along with other, more serious issues, he reveals his perception of its relative importance. Rob's mass of supporters in his shantytown, numbering about sixty, make up less than one-fourth of 1 percent of the student population. Now who is out of touch?

As an elected official, he has a greater responsibility to his constituency, even if it is not to his personal liking. However, he is unwilling to abandon his personal agenda. So I suggest we abandon him. Rob Kampia must go.
