Funding support increases

Despite the deepening recession, the University has drawn $63 million in private funding support for the 1991-92 fiscal year -- the largest amount collected so far.

Brad Choate, associate vice president for development and University relations, said the money has gone to undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowships, new buildings and renovations and faculty support.

"It's really a very significant increase, made even more so by the recession," Choate said.

Figures for 1991-92 show an increase of about $1.6 million from last year's $61.4 million.

The figure does not include an estimated $14 million that the University will earn from the recently signed contract with Pepsico Inc., according to the statement. The 10-year contract entitiles Pepsi to vending and fountain sales, as well as advertising rights in Beaver Stadium and the Academic/Athletic Convocation and Events Center.

Although corporate and foundation donations decreased, funding from individuals -- both alumni and non-alumni -- increased.

Ken Martin, vice president of the Graduate Student Association, said the figure is virtually identical to last year's amount when inflation is taken into consideration."
