Linksters swing by Ohio for Akron Invitational

Collegian Sports Writer

The Penn State men's golf team will be playing in its largest invitational ever this weekend when they travel to Akron, Ohio to play in the 36-team Akron Invitational.

The invitational, which will feature every Big Ten team except Ohio State, is so large that two courses will be used. The Firestone North and West courses in Akron will attempt to facilitate the teams.

"This is by far the biggest invitational Penn State has ever played in," said Matt Shiley, who along with William Smith, Dan Vona, Jason Tyska and Graham Dendler will be travelling to Akron this weekend.

Penn State looks to rebound from its poor performance last weekend at the Indiana Invite because after playing well over Spring Break, the team had a three week layoff before playing at Indiana.

They will not have to worry about losing any momentum over the next couple weeks. After Akron, they will travel to Ohio State next weekend and to the Eastern Championships in Maryland the weekend after that.

"Hopefully by playing consecutive weeks we'll get back to where we were," Shiley said.

Despite poor weather in State College, the golfers have been getting some needed playing time because at season's midpoint, the team isn't quite where it would like to be. This weekend, the team hopes to get back in the swing of things.

"We've been getting on these streaks," said captain William Smith. "There's times when we're hot and then we're not-so-hot. We just need to focus a little more. We should be getting more consistent the next couple of weeks."
