Several people showed their support for the Democratic presidential candidates by holding up signs supporting candidates Jerry Brown and Bill Clinton yesterday at the corner of College Avenue and Allen Street.
"The goal is to show support for Bill Clinton personally, but regardless of who you support, a Democrat is needed," said Nikur Shah (sophomore-civil engineering).
Shannon Kaigan (freshman-political science and French) said their purpose was to show the University that two candidates are running and that Clinton has support on this campus.
"We are hoping to get support and enthusiasm from the students, the faculty and the people of Centre County," Kaigan said.
Collette Martin (freshman-international politics) said she participated to give the Democratic party -- especially Bill Clinton -- some visibility.
"I want to get people out and vote Democrat," Martin said.
Shah agreed, saying, "The message is to re-evaluate what is going on for the past 12 years with this country and to see that a change to the Democratic party is necessary. You can still believe in republicanism, but the best choice right now is Democrat."
Bob Melius of State College said he wanted to let people know Brown was speaking at the University.
"The biggest thing we're fighting is apathy," Melius said. "If they can't hear the guy speak, they can't form an opinion."
Shah said the reaction of the people driving and walking by was generally positive.
"The general reaction is a lot of smiles, waves and horn-honking supporting the Democratic party," Shah said. "People are tired of Bush and they want a change."
