'Tis the season
The networks' exciting new TV season, that is

Collegian Arts Writer

While the world gets ulcers over issues like global warming, the recession and the ending of the Cold War, some Penn Staters have more important things to worry about.

Like next year's TV season, of course.

"I think they should cancel 'The Simpsons,' " said Kimberly Koenig (freshman-wildlife fishery science), contrary to what most students think.

"Herman's Head" is one of her favorites, but "The Cosby Show" has passed its prime, Koenig said.

Many agree that after eight years, "Cosby" has worn out his welcome.

"Cancel 'The Cosby Show.' They've been on too long --they're too goody-goody," Alan Sim (freshman-biology) said.

In fact, many feel that those old stand-bys have just gotten, well . . . old.

"Get rid of 'The Golden Girls,' " said David Gercken (junior-economics).

Having expanded into two shows last season -- "America's Funniest Home Videos" and its "America's Funniest People" counterpart -- have gone from funny to annoying for some.

"I'm getting sick of 'Funniest People' and 'Funniest Home Videos' -- ("America's Funniest People") is just stupid, not funny," said Dana Gugliotta (freshman-premedicine).

Some students even carry grudges when networks temporarily replace their favorite show to try a new show in its place.

Recently, when ABC replaced the popular "Coach" with "Room for Two," Linda Lavin's new show, some viewers were unhappy.

"I hate that they took 'Coach' off," said Beth Rosenburg (freshman-special education).

The new sitcom that replaced it wasn't nearly as good, said Alicia Ma (freshman-division of undergraduate studies).

One program people either love or love to hate is the top-rated "Roseanne."

"It seems too sitcom-ish. It's too fake," Deidra Minemier (freshman-English) said.

Some studens also question the message the shows sends.

"They kind of send mixed signals," Gercken said, citing the episode that brought up the issue of birth control.

One program type that just about everyone seems to want to see taken off the schedule next season is the real-life cop show.

"All FBI shows, 'Unsolved Mysteries,' 'Cops,' " were among the dreaded shows that came to Rosenburg's mind.

But it was Ma who perhaps best summed up the college student's attitude toward TV while trying to balance work and fun.

"I'm pretty desperate for TV, so I'll watch anything."
