We are writing in response to the reader opinion "Wise up," appearing in The Daily Collegian on April 10.
As Residence Life staff for East and North halls, we appreciate the responsible and clear way Robert Short expressed his concern about the events in the North Halls quad.
The behaviors that took place that evening were not approved by Residence Life. Residence Life requested a set of rules for the Emperor and Empress contest, attempting to alleviate ahead of time any problematic situations. The list was approved by Residence Life and University Police Services. What contestants chose to do was not part of the approved rules of the contest.
The comments that Short reported are insulting and inappropriate because they represent disregard for individuals and/or exemplify prejudices in our society.
Residence Life works to provide residence hall students with the opportunity to act as responsible individuals. When students choose actions that are irresponsible, Residence Life responds to students' actions. It is also our responsibility to inform individuals about the impact and consequences of the actions.
Personally, we appreciate the initiative of the people who reported the name calling to the police. Often, the sanctions of peers have the effect of helping others understand the impact of their actions.
Residence Life will continue to work to affirm behaviors that support human rights and dignity while deploring those actions that devalue and oppress human beings.
