This is a letter from an invisible man. I don't exist, at least not in the classroom. I sit and listen to the lectures on relationships, on families and on sexuality and I've discovered that I'm being ignored. I'm referring to heterosexism, the belief that bisexuals, lesbians and gay men don't exist or that we are less important than heterosexuals.
I've walked out of classrooms where the instructor presented material on relationships and only other-sex pairings were mentioned. I am in love with another man and we've been involved for over seven months now. We exist. We deserve to be mentioned.
I've sat enraged while listening to fellow students do an hour presentation on families. The mother and the father were mentioned over and over. I know a family that has two women and their daughter and I'm friends with two men who have been romantically involved for over 18 years. Those are families. Why aren't they mentioned?
I'm tired of being ignored. I'm sick of the token single lecture on homosexuality given in some classes. Lesbians and gay men make up at least 10 percent of a given population. There are even more bisexuals. We deserve not to be ignored. We deserve more than just one chapter in assigned readings. We deserve more than you instructors are giving. Lesbian, bisexual and gay issues need to be included throughout the semester. Don't limit us and don't deny that we are here.
