Bureau cites bar, beer distributor

Collegian Staff Writer

The All-American Rathskeller and Centre Beverage have been cited by the State Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement for liquor law violations.

The Rathskeller, 108 S. Pugh St., was cited on March 23 for allegedly engaging in deceptive business practices, failure to have sufficient amounts of advertised beer on hand and for operating kegs of Yuengling Lager with a tap labeled "Rathskeller," said a supervisor for the State Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, who would only identify himself as Enforcement Supervisor Zupich.

"They are advertising one brand but selling you something else," Zupich said.

Centre Beverage, 127 N. Sparks St., is being cited for allegedly improperly identifying on sales distribution slips the Yuengling Lager beer it sold the Rathskeller. The beer was identified as "Yueng. Skeller," "Skeller" or "Rathskeller," according to a state police search warrant.

"We are contesting the citation," said James Edward Hill, one of the Rathskeller's owners.

"It's part of a business," said employee Bob Gordon, adding, "They tried something different."

Don Blough (senior-civil engineering) said he has seen Rathskeller beer advertised at the bar.

"I have seen it advertised. The last time I was there I saw it advertised," said Blough, who last visited the Rathskeller two weeks ago.

Bar-goers who have frequented the Rathskeller had mixed opinions about the citation.

"I am appalled," said Mark Usarzewicz (senior-elementary education). "It is unfair to the beer drinker to advertise one product and substitute another. You should get what you pay for."

"I guess it really surprises me," said University Residence Life Coordinator Karin Wiedemann. "I guess in the past I always thought of them as running a respectable business. If theyfind them guilty I am going to be disappointed."

"I think that if they are willing to take this to court, then they didn't do it," said Dana Wakumski (senior-administration of justice).

The Rathskeller will be fined if found guilty, Zupich said, but did not specify how much it would be.

No one could be reached for comment at Centre Beverage, but Centre Beverage owner George Piedmo said in a Centre Daily Times article, "I think I was just caught up in the thing."

Piedmo said he was not aware that the Rathskeller was still advertising and selling Rathskeller beer. He said he had waived his right to a hearing before an administrative law judge, and did not plan to challenge the citation, according to the article.

A complaint started the investigation, Zupich said. The incident is still under investigation.
