Lasers, music to light up sky over HUB lawn

Collegian Arts Writer

Jets of light and waves of sound will fill the air tonight in a free laser concert on the HUB lawn.

The high-tech show, called Saturn V, will feature laser graphics set to a diverse selection of recorded music ranging from Bach to Pink Floyd to The Cure. While the soundtrack is being broadcast over a 15,000-watt Ramsa Dolby stereo system, three-dimensional laser beams will shoot out over the audience and form patterns in the air.

Saturn V is an independent production of Brian Winthrop International Ltd., based in Ridgefield, Conn., and will appear in State College due to the efforts of the recently reformed Student Foundation for the Performing Arts.

SFPA has sponsored visits from the S.C.T.V. comedy group and more recently from musician and entertainer Livingston Taylor. The foundation plans to host either a Broadway show or a musical in the fall, depending on next year's budget.

SFPA President Christy Brady (senior-economics), who first joined the organization in Fall Semester 1991, said it took hard work, patience and lots of phone calls to re-establish the student foundation.

"No one came back from last year except the treasurer," Brady said. "We're a small group with lots of big projects -- we really need members."

Weather permitting, the concert will begin at 9 on the HUB lawn, combining all the different musical styles into a unified presentation. However, if the present forecast of thunderstorms continues, the show will be moved to the HUB Ballroom and broken into two separate performances. The first will begin at 7 p.m. and feature only classical and new age music. The second show, starting at 9 p.m., will contain the likes of U2 and Genesis.

SFPA members are trying to remain optimistic that Saturn V will be held outside.

"We're hoping it's going to be outside and praying it doesn't rain," said SFPA member Lisa Goodhart (sophomore-marketing).

"Unless God smiles on me and cancels the thunderstorms, it will probably have to be in the ballroom," Brady said.
