Groves takes off meet to be with family

Collegian Sports Writer

There comes a time in a person's life where one has to put aside love for a sport in favor of something else, no matter what that something else may happen to be.

In the case of Men's Track Coach Harry Groves, that something else would be the love of his family.

Groves skipped part of the Connecticut meet to be with his daughter during her confirmation at a local church, leaving his staff behind to run the meet. It marked the first meet he has missed, or partially missed, during his 40-plus years as a coach.

"When you're young, you feel married to your job, and it comes before anything," Groves said. "But when you've coached for as long as I have, and job security is somewhat of a non-factor now, you feel that you have missed out on some important things in your life. Now, I am trying to catch up on those things that I have missed out on."

Groves said that he had complete confidence in his assistants and his team at this point and they have no problem with organizing and competing in a meet.

"I have two assistant coaches, and then about three or so other people that do a good job when I'm not there," Groves said. "Add that to a head field judge and the track team members themselves, and things run very smoothly.

"The guys have shown determination so far throughout the indoor and continuing up to this point. I hope they keep it up, because things can happen when you believe in yourself."

The win in the dual meet with Connecticut made things that much better for him on that day, since said that it was hard to keep his mind away from the meet, and the win put the whole day in perspective.

"It was a good day the whole way around," Groves said. "I got to spend time with both my families, and I am proud of them both."
