In their last few games, goals for the Lady Lions have not been hard to come by.
The women's lacrosse team beat Lehigh yesterday 10-1 in Bethlehem to continue an offensive surge that started last Thursday in Delaware. The Lady Lions have outscored their opponents 21-2 in their last two games.
"Our intensity was so high, even when we made a mistake we'd get the ball back," Coach Julie Williams said. "It was a good level of intensity to have and we had it for the entire game."
Penn State, ranked sixth in the nation, got off to a 6-0 halftime lead over the Engineers and took a 10-0 lead before Lehigh scored its first goal with just under seven minutes left.
Junior Lori Fitzgerald led the Lady Lions with a hat trick and brought her team-leading goal total to 16. Fitzgerald has increased her scoring output every year and has already topped her season high of 12 goals, achieved last year.
Co-captain Deanna Blood notched three assists in the game and now leads Penn State with 21 points.
But on the other end of the field, the Lady Lions (6-2) employed a pressure defense that forced the Lehigh goalie to come outside more aggressively than she would have liked. Williams believed the defense was what kept Penn State's effort constant.
"The defense was there to pressure and double-team them," she said. "They played well the whole game and never relaxed. . . . We kept pressuring them and they couldn't handle the pressure. They just couldn't get things moving."
Kay Young, Penn State's goalie and co-captain, played the first 43 minutes and recorded five saves as the Lady Lions held Lehigh to just 11 shots in the game. Young has raised her save percentage slowly over the season and is now at 60.3 percent. In total, Penn State registered 25 shots in the game and so far this season, have outshot their opponents 182-146.
Patty Kloidt finished out the game, making three saves in seven minutes.
When senior Mary Beth McNicholas scored two goals in the game, her first of the season, it brought the total number of players who have scored for the Lady Lions to 11.
Donna Bucci scored a goal in the game, making her the only player to have a goal in each of Penn State's eight games.
