Fruity origins

I would like to respond to Tim Frey's comments on Syracuse's team name, the Orangemen. I cannot imagine how someone of Irish Protestant descent, myself included, could be offended, as the name refers to nothing more than one of Syracuse's school colors, orange.

In addition, Syracuse is a particularly poor example for Frey to choose to support his arguments for not changing team names. Until the late 1970s, Syracuse teams were known as Saltine Warriors and used an Indian as a mascot. Initially, Syracuse tried to continue using the Saltine Warrior name but with a Greek or Roman warrior as the mascot, but it never caught on. As a result, Syracuse teams became the Orangemen with an orange, as in the fruit, as a mascot. I cannot see how this mascot could offend anyone.
