Gift relocated

Congratulations seniors! We, the Class of 1992 have already pledged an estimated $34,000 for our class gift -- a landmark Penn State sign.

We want to update you on the status of our gift. As you may already know, last October, the senior class voted this sign as the 1992 gift. Its location -- the front of Old Main lawn seemed perfect, and had been approved by the University. However, much to our surprise, this approval was premature. A facility advisory committee, which oversees all major construction on campus, raised concerns about this location. The committee described Old Main lawn as "sacred ground" and therefore untouchable to further construction.

Therefore, in cooperation with the committee, a new location was chosen on the hill on the northeast side of Beaver Stadium, at the corner of Park Avenue and Curtin Road. This is a major entrance and will become more important in the future. Airport traffic, the new expressway, the future research park and the new Academic and Athletic Events Convocation and Events Center will bring thousands of visitors, students and alumni through this area. Also, remember the 96,000 fans who make their journey here on football weekends.

This end of campus needs some "tradition." Our monumental landmark sign will not only stand out, but will invoke the same tradition seen in other areas of campus.

You may be asking yourself, "Why are we reading about the change in the location for the senior class gift in the opinion section? This is news, not opinion." We felt the same way, yet The Daily Collegian staff and its editor in chief have not given you, the seniors, the right or opportunity to receive this important information, until a very short brief in Thursday's paper.

After all, we've contributed our time and money for a cause that will benefit the University as a whole and we, in turn, deserve more respect than a brief explanation.
