The Pi Kappa Phi fraternity member who was tied to a flagpole wearing underwear while pledges allegedly threw various juices at him voluntarily participated last Wednesday night, fraternity members said.
Because it was voluntary, the incident did not fall under state hazing guidelines, said State College police Lt. C.W. Prestia. A member was cited for disorderly conduct on behalf of the fraternity, State College Bureau of Police Services said.
The Interfraternity Council Board of Controls will decide whether to take disciplinary action, said Rick Funk, Greek life coordinator.
Traditionally, fraternity members "pole" another member when he gets engaged or lavalieres someone -- a pre-engagement tradition.
The member was poled because Chi Omega sorority, 101 S. Haller, voted him man of the year, said Howard Pope, of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, 409 E. Fairmount Ave. Chad Skorupka was man of the year, said Sharon Clarke, Chi Omega president, but fraternity members refused to identify Skorupka as the man who was poled.
