Last Wednesday's Undergraduate Student Government elections drew the largest turnout ever -- and caused some long lines and much disorganization.
The HUB voting site was especially crowded, said Jamie Horowitz (freshman-business), a poll worker at both the HUB and McElwain Hall, adding that between classes and around lunchtime were the worst times.
According to election results, 1,097 students voted at the HUB.
At one point, the HUB site even ran out of ballots, said poll worker Allan Cohen (senior-accounting).
USG Senate President and Elections Prosecutor Joe Atkinson listed a lack of preparation as one of this year's biggest problems.
Commissioners knew the turnout would be large, but didn't know where the most voters would be, said Head Elections Commissioner Tracy Farmer, adding that University gates had a large turnout.
Poll workers were instructed to call the USG office when they were down to about 100 ballots, but some waited until they ran out, Farmer said.
Jen Marsh (junior-liberal arts), who voted at the HUB, called the site a bad spot.
Organizers set up a polling place at the entrance to the HUB basement, off the HUB lawn.
"Everyone has to walk by it," Cohen said, but agreed that the area got too crowded.
Marsh also said she had to wait to place her ballot in the ballot box after she finished voting because of the crowd around the voting table.
The commissioners ran into another problem at the Pollock Halls voting site.
About a half-hour before the polls closed, the Pollock voting site had to be pulled out of the recreation room and into the lobby because a class was scheduled to use the room at the same time, Farmer said.
