Do your homework
A lot of talk and misinterpretation is being spread about the proposed 13 percent flat tax. Let me help people to understand the simple math involved. My total combined income for the 1991 tax year was $37,531.89. I consider this to be exactly the type of middle income amount most "experts" use to criticize the proposal. Now, between the income tax, social security tax and medicare tax, I gave the government $6,784.01. This is 18.1 percent of my income which you can easily compare with a flat 13 percent, which would cost me $4,879.12 -- a direct savings of $1,904.89. I don't know who all of these economists, tax experts and politicians are, but either they can't do simple math or they are unwilling to give up their special discounts, diversions, deductions and exemptions offered in the 4,000 plus pages of the existing tax code. And now those $90,000 a year congressmen want to bribe me with a whopping $200 tax break. To them I say give me back my government instead. I encourage everyone to do the math on their taxes themselves, ask yourself how much the big earners really pay, and then vote for Jerry Brown and the flat tax.
