Waste not, want not
I would like to express my extreme disgust with Penn State University's Housing and Food Service management. On March 26, a special "Robin Hood" theme dinner was held at all campus dining commons. The menu featured only roasted chicken and pork, so I was puzzled when I saw an entire roasted turkey in the serving line. I asked one of the cooks why they were not serving the turkey and I was told that the turkeys were baked and garnished to be decorations for the meal. At Waring Commons alone, two 15-pound turkeys were cooked and thrown away the next day. I have since learned that Housing and Food Services directed all dining commons to do the same thing -- please keep in mind that there are eight dining halls with at least two serving lines per hall. Was cooking and throwing away a minimum of 16 turkeys necessary? Surely this is a wonderful way to emphasize the "Eat What You Take for the Earth's Sake" program that the University began six weeks ago. Obviously the program worked so well that enough food was saved so Housing and Food Services could start throwing it away themselves.
