Van Horn supports Kampia

Collegian Staff Writer

Sporting a conservative haircut and an ultra-traditional suit, Jim Van Horn doesn't look like the person who would be following the long-haired, activist "Nelson twins," Rob Kampia and Beth Schneck.

But Van Horn spent yesterday calling students who signed Kampia and Schneck's petition and reminding them to vote for the liberal ticket.

Van Horn is an avowed conservative. He is a supporter of U.S. Senate candidate Stephen Freind and the chairman of the Centre County Young Republicans. Kampia is the president of the Penn State National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and an acknowledged liberal.

They don't often agree on national issues.

But Van Horn said he thinks Kampia will serve the students best as president of the Undergraduate Student Government.

"Party labels do not have a place on campus," Van Horn said, adding that student issues do not depend on political ties.

Van Horn said he disagrees with Kampia on the issue of equalizing the University's marijuana and alcohol policies, part of the Kampia/Schneck platform.

But Kampia and Schneck will be the strongest advocates for student concerns, especially opening the University budget and keeping tuition increases down, Van Horn said.

"USG needs to be shaken up," he added.

Kampia said he recognized the fact that some people might be turned off by Van Horn working for his campaign because Van Horn has a negative reputation among students as an ultra-conservative, while many of Kampia's supporters are more liberal.

"People just don't expect it," Van Horn agreed.

So instead of having Van Horn hand out fliers at polling places, Kampia said he asked him to work behind the scenes calling people.

Van Horn said he called between 500 and 600 students for Kampia and Schneck yesterday.
