Netmen look for rhythm

Collegian Sports Writer

The men's tennis team is out to make Robert Morris look the fool today.

At 4 p.m., the Lions face Robert Morris at the Penn State Tennis Club. Penn State was victorious, 9-0, when the two teams met last year.

"It's going to be one of those (meets) where we're going to be heavily favored going in," Coach Jan Bortner said. "We've got to use that match to sharpen up our skills --work on some weak areas, tune up your weaknesses, make sure you've got your confidence back.

"When you play a team like Minnesota, you have to come right out and play tough. Here, we get a chance to look at everybody, and that's what we're going to have to do."

The Lions are coming off a 1-1 home weekend, losing 5-4 to Wisconsin on Saturday and trouncing Pittsburgh 8-0 the next day.

"Pitt beat (Robert Morris) 9-0," said Ivan Spinner. "So we should be able to handle them pretty well."

"You can't be overconfident," Corey Goldstein added. "We're just going to go in and take one match at a time and hopefully everybody will do well."

The singles ranks will remain the same for the meet. Eduardo Abril will play in the top seed, followed by Greg Gaunt, Spinner, Chad Skorupka, Goldstein and Brett Englesberg in the third to sixth slots, respectively. Marc Price remains out of the lineup with a knee injury.

In the doubles ranks, the second-seeded team of Englesberg and Spinner will remain intact although the top-seeded team of Gaunt and Marc Payne and third-seeded Abril and Skorupka may not. Following Sunday's meet against Pitt, Bortner said he wanted to look at several different doubles combinations in practice.

The Lions will see action again this weekend with two Big Ten road meets at Minnesota and Iowa.
