Save the trees
On Monday morning I was walking to my agronomy class in the much-needed but all-too-familiar rain. As I headed toward the Agricultural Sciences and Industries building, I observed the horrifying Manic Monday Morning Massacre in yet another one of the Office of the Physical Plant's installments of its March Madness schedule. The alliteration with the M's is a symbol for mean and mortifying. The paragraph above describes my initial feelings about the 15 or so trees (who really cares?) that were cut down along Curtin Road in the Agricultural Science and Industries parking lot! Some of the trees were probably 25 years old or more. Furthermore, some of the pines cut down were the only species of that kind on campus. Please do not get me wrong because I am not blaming the O.P.P. workers who are only doing what they are told to do. If O.P.P. did not cut the trees down, then I am not blaming the contractors that did it because they would have been just doing their job, also. The decision to cut these trees down was made by someone who I hope can give me a decent explanation in The Daily Collegian or a personal letter. Whoever or whatever group decided to do this unfortunately exhibits man's need to triumph over nature instead of being a part of it. The rain forests being cut down are a good example of this. It's a comforting thought to know that 30 more people can park their gas-eating, carbon-monoxide-producing cars in a place that should be reserved for birds, squirrels, and a green landscape. I forgive you O.P.P., but in the future please get your act together. Let's keep all the beautiful landscape that you have already created. Would the person that planted those trees appreciate your actions? I commend you in one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States, but the principle of the matter discourages me and leaves me waiting for a good explanation.
