People involved in a bait-and-switch scam with stereo equipment in Pittsburgh have been identified in the area.
University Police Services is warning people to beware of anyone selling stereo equipment from the back of a van.
The suspects tell prospective customers that they are returning from a stereo show and that their boss told them sell the equipment at "special reduced prices," said Clifford Lutz, University police supervisor.
Customers are shown a model of a speaker, but when they get home and open the box, they find a speaker of lesser quality, Lutz said.
"It looks like a $19.95 speaker," he added.
The suspects usually work near fast-food restaurants, parking lots and malls, Lutz said, adding that people should make sure they buy from reputable dealers.
"If you buy from the back of a truck, you're going to get ripped off," he said.
