Two members of the men's diving team leaped into unchartered waters this weekend, and they didn't know what to expect. But they didn't do too bad for themselves.
Sophomore Chris Devine and senior Mike Westwood took part in the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis last Thursday and Friday. Neither had competed in the meet before, and only Devine had competed at this high a level, at Senior Nationals last year.
Devine did extremely well at NCAAs, placing 12th in the 1-meter diving on Thursday, good enough for honorable mention All-American honors in the events. On Friday he finished 17th in the 3-meter diving, missing honorable mention All-American by just one place in that event. Not surprisingly, both Devine and his coach were extremely pleased.
"I was very happy with the way I dove," Devine said. "Things went really well. It was a good meet this year, since everybody's getting ready for Olympic Trials."
"Chris was probably one of the best jumpers and quicker spinners in the competition," Coach Craig Brown said.
Westwood was a little more tentative going in, since he hadn't had any exposure to diving on the national level. But by finishing 33rd on the 1-meter and 31st on the 3-meter, he got the experience.
"Mike looked good, but he didn't have the crispness of some of the other divers," Brown said. "He needed to be a little bit more pumped up."
Since Devine is a sophomore, he'll probably have another shot to compete at NCAAs in the next two years. Brown's pretty sure that Devine will be back.
"This year we really expected him to click, and he did," Brown said. "If he get a little more juiced up, even better things are going to come for him."
They might come even sooner. Devine and Westwood, teammate Ryan Smith, two Lady Lion divers -- senior Amy Schmidt and freshmen Tara Stevens -- and Penn State diving alumnus Jeff Eagles will be headed for Senior Nationals next weekend.
