Fight the power
On Monday evening I went to Schwab Auditorium expecting to hear Ms. Faye Wattleton present an articulate, informative talk on a woman's right to choose. Unfortunately, after Ms. Wattleton's brilliant speech I once again had to hear the usual pointless rhetoric of the anti-choice, all-knowing, white men. Just as I was recovering from this first assault of ignorance, I opened Tuesday's Daily Collegian to find Larry Ott's similar, advantaged-white-male opinion on a woman's right to choose. Well gentlemen, a lot of us are getting tired of hearing your white, male (and presumably heterosexual) point of view. When you become part of a group that consistently receives less pay on the basis of your gender, then I'll listen to your opinions. Once you are denied access to education, housing, or employment due to the color of your skin, or your baby isn't adopted because of the color of her skin, I'll give your ideas some consideration. If you're ever attacked because of holding hands in public with someone you love, then I'll hear what you have to say. And if the day comes when someone tries to control your bodies, I'll be receptive to your needs. Until then, I, along with other underrepresented people, will continue to dismantle the system that upholds your advantage. And yes, we enjoy watching you squirm.
