Letter to the Editor
Madness is great
We believe that Craig Ostroff's article about March Madness is one of the most poorly thought out articles we have ever read. Although Craig is entitled to his own opinion just like everyone else, we feel that his viewpoint and suggestions completely destroy everything the tournament stands for. The 64-team field, which Craig suggested to cut to 16 teams, is a fair representation of the hundreds of Division 1 basketball teams. If the field were cut to 16, it would be clear that those 16 teams would come only from the powerhouse conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big East, SEC, PAC-10) and thus eliminate the smaller schools' chance to even participate in the tournament. By including even the lesser-known conferences, the 64-team tournament gives the smaller schools (like the Howards and the Campbells) something to shoot for. Without these smaller schools, the tournament would not have the uncertainties and excitement that make it as popular as it is. In our own note to CBS: thank you very much for the excellent coverage. We appreciate your keeping us informed of all the great happenings immediately as they unfold by briefly showing us more than one game at once, but then quickly taking us to the more exciting game. We guess that this is only something that can be appreciated by true basketball fans, which obviously Craig is not. And finally our note to Craig: take some aspirin for that migraine and feel free to change the channel because no one is holding a gun to your head. Let the Madness continue!
