Nothing to hide

I'd like to clear up some misconceptions that Collegian readers may have after reading the story "USG candidate defends move," which appeared in Thursday's Collegian. The article was misleading and biased.

In the article my intergrity was questioned by two supporters of Rob Kampia, candidate for Undergraduate Student Government president. One of them accused me of lying. From the moment I was contacted by the Collegian I have been as open as I possibly can. I have nothing to hide. I have done nothing wrong.

On Oct. 16, 1990 I attended my first USG Senate meeting as a senator. I had been appointed by the USG senate president the previous week. When I was appointed and approved I was a fraternity member living in an apartment.

Later, once on senate, my roommate and I traded our apartment for a room in our fraternity house at the request of two older brothers.

Upon moving down the street, I asked then USG Senate President Mark Stewart, and USG Senate's Senate Appointments and Review Board Chairwoman Tracey Maulfair about the implications of the move. They informed me that the move did not require the need for me to tender my resignation, and they encouraged me to remain on the senate.

There are no stipulations in the USG Constitution and Bylaws about changing address while a senator. I continued to serve students from the fraternity house as I had from my apartment.

I hope this clarifies the issue at hand. I would now like to refocus on discussing our platform; issues that make an important difference in the lives of undergraduates at Penn State.

Jim Ryerson
USG presidential candidate
