USAB discusses student concerns about tuition, PSU priorities

Collegian Staff Writer

The Undergraduate Student Advisory Board last night discussed the results of a survey that accompanied the Undergraduate Student Government's tuition workshop.

The survey asked students questions concerning the budget increases and how they were affecting them and their families, said USG President Mark Stewart. The survey also asked students if they had any general concerns about the University.

Stewart said the results showed that students had concerns in three areas:

-- Where tuition money is going.

-- Why it seems that even with tuition increases the quality of the University's education is declining.

-- Where the University's priorities lie, such as the building of the Academic/Athletic Convocation and Events Center.

USAB President E.J. Shaffer said that if students are now leaving the University unhappy, the University will not receive alumni support in the future -- thus hurting the University's future economic outlook.

Stewart thought the best way to gauge students' attitudes would be with an exit survey asking graduating students their thoughts on the University.

Concerning the convocation center, Graduate Student Association President Tom D'Alfonso said that in a recent Board of Trustees meeting he was disappointed with the academic half of the center. D'Alfonso thought that not enough importance was placed on the academic aspect of the building and said he believes that people have the right to know exactly what will be put into the building before it is finished.

Stewart agreed.

"As far as I'm concerned, the Academic/Athletic Convocation Center is an oxymoron, " Stewart said.
