Ryerson, Anderson bring back-burner issues upfront

Collegian Staff Writers

Jim Ryerson and Candice Anderson wish they could replace the reflective windows on the Undergraduate Student Government office in the HUB with clear glass so students could see their leaders working for them inside.

"I want students to be able to look in and see that we are working," said Ryerson (junior-labor and industrial relations), adding that students need to know that USG officials are just like everyone else.

Ryerson is the current USG executive assistant and was previously a USG town senator. Anderson is the staff coordinator for USG Legal Affairs.

Communication is the most important factor to the Ryerson and Anderson (junior-political science) ticket in their campaign.

"There are other ways to get media attention than just name-calling and finger-pointing," Ryerson said.

They want to pull more students into USG by publishing a periodic newsletter with names and numbers of USG people to contact to get involved with projects, he said.

One of the projects Ryerson and Anderson plan to implement is a USG loan program for students who need to borrow small sums of money to pay credit card or phone bills.

These loans would be interest-free and the money could be funded through corporate sponsors and USG funds, Ryerson said.

Ryerson and Anderson listed another priority as providing students with more computer facilities.

Students pay a $35 computer fee that should go toward purchasing more computers and enhancing the labs the University already has, Ryerson said. The current ratio at the University is 52 students to every one computer.

This ticket also cites the importance of keeping in mind student opinion and thinks it is up to the individual leader to make USG more approachable.

"It is hard to say you want to bring in other groups if you are not organized within USG," Ryerson said.

Ryerson and Anderson said they won't be just another Mark Stewart and Merryl Werber, the current USG president and vice president.

The platform Stewart and Werber got elected on last year was entirely service-oriented, Ryerson said, adding that the issues he and Anderson stress are ones that were on the back burner in Stewart's administration.

Anderson said she and Ryerson wouldn't be running unless they saw things about the current USG that needed to be changed.

Ryerson and Anderson equate their ideas for USG to the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

"For Dance Marathon, people are all working for one goal. Students put their differences aside and every year it gets better," Ryerson said, adding that he and Anderson want to bring this approach to USG.
