Letter to the Editor
No kidding
Considering the amount of flak that The Daily Collegian has taken in recent months, the March 20 column by Opinion Editor Kevin Naff should come as no large surprise. The large headline reads "Editorial page serves an important role on college campuses." A better headline might have been "Kevin Naff points out the patently obvious." I think that, though most of us are not journalism majors, most of us can tell the difference between reader opinion and Collegian staff opinion, especially when the different parts are clearly labeled. I, for one, do not need Kevin Naff to inform me that no contributor to the Collegian is my appointed spokesperson. I can think for myself, thank you. I've had at least one communications course with Mr. Naff, and consider him to be an intelligent, thoughtful person with a fair amount of discretion. Naff's statement that "the collegiate setting allows for discussion of topics considered too controversial for the mainstream media" strikes me as being dangerously close to saying "we run whatever we want because we can." That argument, made in the name of public forum, doesn't cut any ice with me, nor should it.
