As the coming election approaches, one issue will be pushed to the forefront time and time again. It is the issue of abortion. The Supreme Court has scheduled arguments that could alter the present law. This is seen by many as a major triumph, yet by others a major setback. It is a moral issue as well as a religious one. I am writing now to ask everyone to rethink what they believe. In my opinion, I don't think it should be a matter of being for or against abortion. That division is made very easily and reinforced by our media as only two sides are usually shown. I am advocating a new concept of not making abortion illegal, but unnecessary. This is truly the most difficult path. We must look at what factors in society necessitate abortion. I see two major factors -- first, the lack of understanding of sex and birth control, and second, the imperfection of birth control. This excludes one group: victims of rape and incest and I firmly advocate choice for them. We also must pressure industry to perfect birth control. We live in a capitalistic society and as consumers we have the right to better products. This imperfection is a risk for sex both within marriage and outside of marriage. This peace of mind will make for a better night's sleep. It is important to recognize that abortion is a traumatic experience and is not without risk. It should not be a part of every woman's life. We must work to make it unnecessary. We must work to address needs that are within society as opposed to forcing ideas upon it. The Supreme Court decision could change the laws, but not the people. This decision will cause great strife and pain especially in the lower class where options that are available to the rich are equally available. Change must occur from within. The pro-life and pro-choice lobbies should put their efforts into something that would be constructive as opposed to an endless battle that will never be solved. America needs new ideas and different approaches and not the same pitched battle that our media are so quick to pounce upon.
