If the NCAA tournament is the big dance then the Lady Lions will start hearing the music tommorrow in Rec Hall.
Penn State (23-6) will get a second look at DePaul (21-9) tommorow at noon as the women's basketball team hosts a second round game against the Blue Demons.
The Lady Lions won the teams first meeting two months ago, 66-49, but since that contest, a lot has changed, especially for DePaul.
The No. 11 seed Blue Demons have rolled into the tournament winning 15 of their last 16 games including a 67-65 upset win over No. 6 seed Arizona State in the first round Wednesday night.
DePaul has also changed its starting lineup by inserting Stella Woodley at forward, replacing Carla Stone. Woodley played 22 minutes in the earlier game and scored 12 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Against Arizona State she scored 14 points and had seven boards.
"She really was a constant for DePaul and kept them going," Coach Rene Portland said. "She has a better jumper from the high post so her flexibility gave them some real nice features."
Woodley is a post player who averaged almost 12 points and 6.5 rebounds a game this season. She has proven to be a lot quicker than Stone and has added more dimensions to the play of the Blue Demons.
But one thing that hasn't changed is DePaul's style of play. Last time around, the Blue Demons employed a man-to-man defense that slowed Penn State down to a crawl as the Lady Lions sank only 20-of-51 shots, their lowest shot total at home this season.
"We tried to be strong defensively at that point in time in the season," DePaul Coach Frank Bruno said. "We were reasonably strong defensively at that point but the offense hadn't started to click in yet. I think we're a much better team offensively than we were January 17."
One reason for the slow-paced and tempo-controlled style of DePaul is the fact that it has a limited bench. The Blue Demons are playing without a backup point guard and don't have more than a couple of quality players off the bench.
"They really controlled the tempo of the game and that's one thing we have to avoid on Saturday," Portland said.
Throughout the latter stages of the game Saturday, Portland will most likely counter with her bench. Coming off a brief vacation, the pressing team will be called into action with players like Jackie Donovan and Katina Mack taking the floor.
In their previous meeting, DePaul was also able to dominate in the paint. The Blue Demons outscored Penn State 34-20 in the dark blue portion of the Rec Hall floor and the Lady Lions out-rebounded them by only three. Center Kathy Phillips wants to make sure that doesn't happen again.
"For us, we need to control the inside," Phillips said. "They're just as big as we are but we're better, we're smarter underneath. We've got to be physical with them because they were physical with us and I think we were a little taken back. We've got to put a body on them and get the rebounds."
Bruno said that on his end, it will be important to combat the experience that Penn State exhibits with its four senior starters. Because of the amount of time that the group has spent playing together, he believes that the Lady Lions can do just that much more when they take the court.
"Penn State is just your classic senior basketball team," Bruno said. "Anywhere you focus your attention you've got another player on the team that can pick them up. You have to be ready to play against a very strong, experienced team. You just take care of business against every single player on the Penn State team -- not just focus on one, a (Susan) Robinson."
Earlier in the season, Penn State was able to capitalize on a still forming 7-7 DePaul team. The Lady Lions benefitted from a number of breakaway layups by guard Carla Coleman but she doesn't believe that it will be so easy Saturday as they face each other for a second time.
"I know that it won't be as easy in that first game," Coleman said. "I think they're going to be psyched to play us and ready and focused the same as we are. We know that they improved and know also that we improved. We're looking for a hard-fought game this Saturday afternoon."
